Harris Hospital Participates in American Heart Activities
NEWPORT, Ark. (February 24, 2009) - February is American Heart Month. During this time, the American Heart Association’s “Go Red for Women” movement works to raise awareness about women’s No. 1 killer, heart disease. Each year cardiovascular diseases claim the lives of nearly half a million women – that’s almost one per minute. Harris Hospital participated this year by requesting their employees to wear red on February 6th, the official “Wear Red Day.” For those who wanted to make a donation, red ribbons were sold for $1.00.
On February 20th, Harris Hospital employees sponsored a bake sale as another way to make a donation to this worthy cause. A total of $495.00 from both events was raised and sent to the American Heart Association in support for women’s heart disease awareness.
Also, on Thursday, February 26th, the hospital’s Healthy Woman Program will present “Women’s Heart Health – The Heart Truth” by Dr. Fran Duke. This program in intended to make women more aware of the danger of heart disease and is aimed at women ages 40 to 60, the time when a woman’s risk of heart disease starts to rise. The messages are also important for younger women, since heart disease develops gradually and can start at a young age – even in the teenage years. Older women have an interest too – it’s never too late to take action to prevent and control the risk factors for heart disease.
