Mediterranean Diet Discussed at Harris Hospital Lunch-n-Learn
Newport, AR (March 1, 2010) - Harris Hospital registered dietitians, Selma Kinser and Angie Skinner, presented a program to the community on Wednesday, February 17th, regarding healthy diets. Kinser discussed the Mediterranean-style diets which are often close to our dietary recommendations.
- high consumption of fruits, vegetables, bread and other cereals, potatoes, beans, nuts and seeds
- olive oil is an important monounsaturated fat source
- dietary products, fish and poultry are consumed in low to moderate amounts, and little red meat is eaten
- eggs are consumed zero to four times a week
- wine is consumed in low to moderate amounts
Skinner gave a demonstration of types of food that could be used in these types of diets. A meal prepared by the hospital dietary department (menu was food on Mediterranean Diet) was served to the guests.
